SHARES Swimming

In April 2015 SHARES took over responsibility for teaching swimming for the SHARES cluster of schools. A new swim team was created with the aim of taking swimming to a higher level within the town. Swim lessons were increased from 30 minutes to 45 minutes and the opportunity to swim for additional weeks was introduced. The majority of shares schools now swim for 36 weeks and children are accessing, on average 8 hours more swimming per year than they were previously.

In the following September the SHARES able, gifted and talented  (AG+T) Swim Club was launched with children from each school being identified as having excellent ability and then invited to the club to work on club swimming techniques. The club takes place between 3.45 and 4.45pm on a Monday and children also work towards achieving either their bronze, silver or gold award. From attending the club 3 children have progressed on to club level after participating in trails. This is a massive achievement and we wish them the best of luck!

SHARES Swimming also deliver a swim holiday club 3 times a year. The club runs from 9.30a.m. – 11a.m. each morning for a week and takes up to 20 children. Staff from the SHARES Swim Team deliver the sessions which provide a great opportunity for children to have some intensive swimming lessons and can deliver great results in terms of improving children’s ability. The clubs, as is always the case with our holiday provisions, has a fun element which encourages children to want to come to the club. From having half a dozen children when we first started with the provision the club has grown and now reaches its capacity each week.

The SHARES Swim Team are highly skilled and are committed to supporting children to achieve their potential. The overall results across the town this year saw 84% of children achieve the National Curriculum against a national average of 48%. Three school’s achieved 100% pass rate with several others attaining percentages in the high 90’s.

“Our swimming sessions this academic year have been the most successful we have had for many years.  All students have made progress and have achieved varied levels and awards according to their needs.  The tutors have worked brilliantly with all of the students and have taken the time to get to know them and understand their individual needs.  We look forward to our sessions next academic year”.
