Physical Education

SHARES Lancashire’s Physical Education (PE) is structured in a creative, engaging, and progressive manner, following the guidelines and outcomes of all 6 areas of the National Curriculum. Alongside the planning and delivery, SHARES PE includes a detailed assessment provision in order to support pupils’ progress throughout their Primary PE journey, and preparation for Secondary Physical Education.

Working alongside a range of schools, our PE specialists are constantly reviewing the quality of the PE provision and ensuring that pupils are receiving the highest quality education. Furthermore, pupils have the opportunity to represent their schools, in a number of sporting activities through regular structured competitions, and opportunity to develop sporting interests outside of the school setting.

Our targets:

  • All children participate in Physical Education- ensuring that ‘Every Child Matters’
  • Creating pathways for children, who are excel, or are interested in furthering their sporting knowledge through after school clubs and community clubs.
  • Creating a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive environment to develop PE and sporting success.
  • Tackle childhood obesity and promote a health active lifestyle inside and outside of school.
  • Engage all pupils in Physical Education lessons.

Within PE lessons, pupils in Key Stage 1 focus on the development of (gross) Fundamental Movement Skills- the building blocks to successful Physical Education experiences, whilst Key Stage 2 begins to focus on technical sports-specific, and tactical, skills associated to a range of activities. Through the SHARES Lancashire PE scheme of work, children have the opportunity to apply developed knowledge into practical scenarios and begin to learn how to adapt these skills in different situations.

Alongside planning and delivery, our PE specialists ensure that pupils begin to take ownership of the learning- helping pupils to perform a range of increasingly complex skills with more accuracy, confidence and control. Pupils will also be taught the importance of maintaining Healthy Active Lifestyles- including; balanced diets, strength and conditioning activities in order to improve fitness, and the importance of Mental, Social, and Physical Health. Furthermore, lessons are designed to be as inclusive, and fully integrational as possible, in order for all pupils to achieve and succeed. SHARES staff help to identify pupils with SEND and support adaptations to lessons and activities to maximise participation and enjoyment within lessons.

SHARES Lancashire are committed to providing the highest quality Physical Education, not only for our pupils, but also the upskilling and development of school staff within the SHARES cluster (in order to comply with the outlines of the School Sports Premium). Our specialist PE team have created a thorough and engaging CPD library in order to continue to drive the importance of PE within schools, as well as providing teachers with enhanced knowledge and skill sets to increase PE delivery confidence and competence. As part of the SHARES Physical Education package, we offer half-termly CPD sessions to each school to ensure teachers are full equipped with up-to-date knowledge to succeed within PE.

Linking into the SHARES Physical Education package, we have developed a comprehensive 3I’s document and detailed Physical Education ‘road map’ to support high quality Physical Education; delivery, planning, and promotion of the subject. Alongside this, SHARES PE staff also support Physical Education Intervention programmes, running breakfast, lunch time, and after school clubs, that can be tailor made to target particular groups of pupils in a range of sporting activities. This can be inclusive of SEND pupils, underachieving pupils, or focusing on building relationships between pupils.

Below are some testimonies from our SHARES schools and the impact our PE specialists have made in the schools/ driving the subject forward…
